CORAL PROPAGATION IN KOH LIPE

Ocean-Quest-Logo-black.png

Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet, hosting more species per unit area than any other marine environment. However, the health of coral reefs around the world is in serious decline. One solution is coral reproduction or coral propagation. Sea Shepherd, in association with Ocean Quest, offers coral propagation courses.

Globally, an estimated 500 million people live within 100 kilometers of a coral reef and benefit from its production and protection. However, the most recent reports indicate that up to 27 percent of monitored reef formations have been lost and up to 32 percent are at risk of being lost in the next 32 years. This damage can be largely attributed to human activity. Many are now looking for solutions to this problem, in the face of what is a developing environmental disaster. One such solution is coral propagation or coral reproduction.

Sea Shepherd Dive has partnered with Malaysia-based Ocean Quest, which, among other services, offers coral propagation courses. There are various methods of coral propagation around the world, many of which use questionable methodology that includes metal grating, PVC pipes, leather, and even electrolysis. What attracted Sea Shepherd Dive to Ocean Quest was its almost entirely natural method. The founder of Ocean Quest is Anuar Abdullah. Anuar is a divemaster / artist / oceanographer, and has spent most of his life on the coral reefs of Malaysia, observing their behavior and life cycles, and conducting his own research.

The fundamental principle of the Ocean Quests Coral Propagation Program (CPP) is that the program is ONLY used to rebuild damaged reefs, NOT to create new reefs where they were not previously found. In addition to restoring our reefs, this program goes beyond the sea to target the root cause of the problem: impoverished local coastal communities forced to collect coral for their livelihoods. Ocean Quest aims to engage local communities in its CPPs, thereby providing them with an alternative source of income that aims to protect, rather than destroy, coral reefs.

CORAL PROPAGATION WORKSHOP

The Coral Propagation Workshop - The Ocean Quest - is an introductory program for those who wish to learn about the processes in an organic coral propagation system. This workshop is a one-day hands-on training experience that is packed with knowledge and fun to participate in. Anyone who wants to learn about coral propagation should start by signing up for this workshop.

Its goal is to educate the public about coral propagation for the purpose of large-scale coral rehabilitation. Information and scientific findings are transferred to a simplified educational system suitable for coastal communities and tropical islands. By increasing the population of people knowledgeable about coral rehabilitation, restoration work can be carried out on a larger scale and more systematically. This program is suitable for people with little or no diving qualifications, as it does not include any activities in the water.

There are six important chapters in the Coral Rehabilitation Manual:

1. Introduction to the propagation of corals: the topic includes the benefits of coral rehabilitation for society and the environment.

2. Corals: the topic includes types and shapes of corals, their importance in the marine environment, the reproduction of corals and more.

3. Coral Propagation Equipment - A comprehensive topic covering all aspects of coral rehabilitation equipment and instruments.

4. Extraction and management of coral spawners: This topic covers the proper procedures for the extraction and handling of corals. This is a crucial step to ensure minimal impact and stress on the body during the rehabilitation process.

5. Substrate: a topic that covers all types of substrates used in coral restoration, their advantages and disadvantages. Includes an overview of all synthetic materials and natural substrates.

6. Coral Propagation Methods and Techniques - This topic covers coral rehabilitation techniques invented by Ocean Quest.

CORAL PROPAGATION COURSE

Coral Propagation Course - The Ocean Quest - Coral Propagation Course in a comprehensive training program aimed at students who want to be part of a long-term coral propagation project. It is an intermediate training course that includes ethical techniques and practices in the propagation of corals. Topics discussed in the course include fundamental knowledge of corals, proper coral equipment, extraction and management, substrates, and coral propagation techniques.

The intention of the Coral Propagation Course is to provide a comprehensive training course on the propagation of corals. After completing this course, students can apply to participate in any of Ocean Quest Global's ongoing coral rehabilitation projects around the world. The Ocean Quest Coral Propagation Course is a comprehensive module that aims to develop a deeper understanding of coral rehabilitation techniques. This course provides a higher level of knowledge about coral management and reproductive extraction. The course also includes site preparation, equipment, and monitoring methods.

6. Coral Propagation Methods and Techniques - This topic covers coral rehabilitation techniques invented by Ocean Quest.

7. Hands-on Execution - Practice your workshop and your theory by going to collect substrate and coral fragments (coral nursery preparation), and then place them in our nursery right in front of the dive center!  4 dives in 2 days.
